Cold Spring Harbor
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Cold Spring Harbor is Billy Joel's debut album, released on 1 November 1971 by Family Productions. The title refers to a village on Long Island Sound, close to his home town, and the sleeve was photographed on Harbor Road. Tomorrow Is Today stems from his depression and hospitalisation the year before. Because of a mastering error the tracks ran slightly too fast, making his voice sound unnaturally high. He was furious when he heard the record. Producer Artie Ripp, owner of the masters, took the blame.
The record sold poorly and only received attention after Piano Man and later albums had become popular. In 1983 a remixed version at the correct speed was released on Columbia, without his involvement. He himself feels there is something wrong with it. She's Got a Way and Everybody Loves You Now he later released live on Songs in the Attic.
