Piano Man
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Piano Man is Billy Joel's second studio album, released on 14 November 1973 on Columbia Records. It arose from legal problems with his previous label, Family Productions, and ultimately became his breakthrough. In the United Kingdom it was not released until April 1975, on CBS. The title song tells, in fictionalised form, of his experiences as a bar pianist in Los Angeles and reached number 25 on the American Hot 100. Travelin' Prayer and Worse Comes to Worst also made the chart.
Rolling Stone wrote that the record revealed a new seriousness and flexibility and compared the style with that of Elton John. Billboard saw a good opportunity for a quality artist on the radio. The album reached number 27 on the Billboard 200 and went gold in 1975. Even so, he received only 8,000 dollars in royalties from it.
