A Jackson in Your House
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
A Jackson in Your House · In 1969 the Art Ensemble of Chicago recorded this album for the French label BYG Actuel. The four musicians are Lester Bowie on trumpet, Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on saxophones, clarinets and percussion, and Malachi Favors Maghostut on bass. On the 1989 CD, The Waltz was replaced by a live fragment, Hey Friend, which did not return in later editions.
Critics mainly heard the players' backgrounds reflected: free improvisation, European modern classical music, attempts to incorporate African music and a strongly theatrical streak. AllMusic gave the record four and a half stars and called it entertaining and carefree. JazzTimes pointed to the circus-like title song, to Ericka, a spoken piece with marimba, and to Song for Charles, a long, lyrical tribute to the late Charles Clark.
