Message to Our Folks
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Message to Our Folks · This album was recorded in Paris on 12 August 1969 for the French label BYG Actuel. The Art Ensemble of Chicago consisted of Lester Bowie on trumpet, Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on saxophones and clarinets, and Malachi Favors Maghostut on bass and vocals. Mitchell also played flute, and all four regularly picked up percussion instruments.
The record consists of only four pieces, which vary greatly in length. Old Time Religion lasts just over seven minutes, Dexterity about four, Rock Out just over eight, and A Brain for the Seine, at more than twenty minutes, takes up half the album. Almost all of the music is by Mitchell. It is a record in which short and long pieces alternate.
