Something in Return

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Something in Return is a duo record by alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons and drummer Andrew Cyrille. They recorded it on 13 February 1981 at Soundscape in New York, but the album was not released until 1988, on the label Black Saint. Both came from the circle around Cecil Taylor. The Penguin Guide to Jazz calls Cyrille an orchestra in himself, who conjures up layered energy, and gave it three and a half stars.

The opening track is Take the A Train by Billy Strayhorn. One reviewer described it as a challenging exercise in improvisation, in which Lyons does not let go of the familiar theme but gives it a new twist each time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Take the A Train and notice how the familiar theme keeps sounding through while saxophone and drums approach it differently each time.
