Nuba

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Nuba · For this album, Andrew Cyrille came together in June 1979 in Milan with singer and poet Jeanne Lee and saxophonist Jimmy Lyons. It was released on the Italian label Black Saint. It is therefore not a standard jazz trio: Lee's voice is as central as the drums and the alto sax.

The two versions of Nuba are based on a poem that Lee wrote in June 1979 for Lyons and Cyrille. In These Last Days is an adaptation of a poem from 1973. The lyrics are printed in the booklet that comes with the record. Lee does not sing the words straight ahead, but stretches and repeats them and also uses wordless cries. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called the album almost a miniature opera, and one reviewer wrote that there was nothing conventional or predictable about it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to In These Last Days and follow how Jeanne Lee stretches and repeats words, while saxophone and drums follow her.
