What About?

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

What About? · This was the first album that drummer Andrew Cyrille recorded under his own name. He made it in August 1969 in Paris, during a week-long marathon session of the label BYG Actuel. In that same week, Archie Shepp, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Sunny Murray, among others, recorded albums there.

It is a solo record for percussion, without other musicians. Each of the five pieces has a character of its own: the title song begins with metronomic precision, From Whence I Came leans on the tom-toms and includes vocal sounds, Rhythmical Space mainly lets the cymbals sound. Rims And Things focuses on the rims of the drums. Critics praised the space and the silences in his playing and found the record surprisingly accessible. One reviewer called it one of the most refreshing solo drum albums ever.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Rhythmical Space and notice how many different sounds come out of the cymbals, and how the silences between the strokes carry the playing.
