X Man

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

X Man was recorded in May 1993 at Sear Sound in New York and released in 1994 on Soul Note. Drummer Andrew Cyrille plays here with flautist James Newton, guitarist Alix Pascal and bassist Anthony Cox. Each musician wrote two of the eight pieces, and the solos are fairly shared out. Scott Yanow found the music surprisingly soft and melodic for such improvisers, a subtle record that becomes more interesting with every listen.

The Penguin Guide to Jazz heard the flute and guitar adding a new palette of colours, closer to Cyrille's sense of melody, and found that he here shows one of his simplest and least dense ways of playing.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to E-Squat and notice how clearly the flute's theme sounds and how restrained the drumming stays beneath it.
