The Piano Scene of Ahmad Jamal

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Piano Scene of Ahmad Jamal · The Piano Scene of Ahmad Jamal was released in 1959, but the recordings come from earlier years. They date from his first sessions for Okeh in Chicago in 1951 and 1952 and from a session for Epic in New York in October 1955. There are also tracks from the sessions for the 1956 album The Ahmad Jamal Trio. The record therefore shows how the pianist sounded at the beginning of his career.

The repertoire consists of standards and his own work, such as Old Devil Moon, Poinciana and Ahmad's Blues. The jazz historian Scott Yanow remarked that Jamal's use of space and dynamics was very different from that of any other jazz pianist of the time. According to him, the record shows a style that would have a great influence on the music of Miles Davis.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Poinciana and notice how Jamal leaves space between the notes and how he lets the volume shift.
