Jamal at the Penthouse

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Jamal at the Penthouse was recorded live at Nola's Penthouse Studio in New York and was released in 1959 on Argo Records. The album differs from other records by Ahmad Jamal. His trio, with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernel Fournier, is here joined by a string orchestra of fifteen musicians under the direction of arranger and conductor Joe Kennedy. Jamal thereby leaves the usual trio format, although the trio itself remains present.

Scott Yanow of AllMusic gave it three out of five stars. He called it a change of pace: the interpretations are mostly beautiful, but offer enough variety to hold the attention. The repertoire includes standards such as Ivy by Hoagy Carmichael, alongside Ahmad's Blues by Jamal himself and Sophisticated Gentleman by Kennedy.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ivy by Hoagy Carmichael and notice how the string orchestra complements the trio.
