Tarab: the Egyptian golden age

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Tarab: the Egyptian golden age · Tarab is the Arabic word for the rapture that music evokes in listeners. In Cairo, that rapture became mass culture: from the 1930s, Umm Kulthum gave a concert on the first Thursday of every month that was broadcast live on the radio, and then the streets stayed empty. She sang lines again and again and differently each time, encouraged by the hall, so that a single song could last an hour. In Anta Oumri (1964), her first song by Mohammed Abdel Wahab, even an electric guitar can be heard.

Listening

Listening tip. In Anta Oumri, listen to the orchestra: strings, oud and qanun play one melody together, each with small ornaments of its own.
