Mohammed Abdel Wahab

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Mohammed Abdel Wahab was a singer, oud player and composer in Cairo and made his first recordings as a child. From 1933 he acted in musical films, beginning with الوردة البيضاء (The White Rose), and he brought in rhythms from outside Arabic music, such as a waltz in El Gandol (1941). For Oum Kalthoum he wrote ten songs, including Anta Oumri (1964). In this way he linked the old tarab with film, radio and the modern orchestra.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Etab and hear how his soft, supple voice sings the ornamented melody, while the orchestra answers every phrase.
