Oum Kalthoum

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Oum Kalthoum learned to sing religious songs from her father as a girl in a village in the Nile Delta and became the greatest female singer of the Arab world in Cairo. From 1934 she gave a concert on the first Thursday of every month that was broadcast live on the radio. In Al-Atlal (1966), to music by Riad Al Sunbati, she sings the same line differently each time, until the hall is swept into ecstasy. At her funeral in 1975 millions of people turned out.

Listening

Listening tip. In Al-Atlal, listen to how the orchestra plays a long introduction before her voice comes in, and how she then bends one phrase again and again.
