Fairuz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Fairuz, born Nouhad Haddad in Beirut, began as a choir singer on Lebanese radio. There she met the brothers Assi and Mansour Rahbani, who from her first hit Itab (1952) wrote almost all her songs: short, clear songs instead of hours-long Egyptian performances. From 1957 she performed at the Baalbek festival, and in 1961 she also recorded songs by Mohammed Abdel Wahab. Many Arab radio stations still open the morning with her voice.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sakana al leyel, a song by Abdel Wahab, and hear how clearly and restrainedly Fairuz sings, without the long ornaments of Oum Kalthoum.
