Sufi music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Sufi music · After the death of the poet Rumi in 1273, his followers founded the Mevlevi order in Konya, known for the whirling dervishes. Their ceremony, the sema, is a prayer in motion: the dancers turn with the right hand raised to heaven and the left hand towards the earth. The most important instrument is the ney, a reed flute with a breathy, rustling sound, and Rumi opened his great poem with the lament of that flute. Elsewhere, too, Sufis sing themselves into rapture with repeated hymns of praise.
Listening
Listening tip. In this taksim, hear how Kudsi Ergüner lets his breath sound along in the ney: that rustling is part of the tone.
