Kudsi Erguner

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Kudsi Erguner, born in Diyarbakır, learned the ney, the reed flute of the Mevlevi dervishes, from his father Ulvi Erguner. In the 1970s he moved to Paris, where in the early 1980s he founded an institute for Sufi music. He recorded old Ottoman repertoires and also played with jazz musicians, with Peter Gabriel and with the oud player Anouar Brahem. On Sufi Music of Turkey (1990) he plays the music of the whirling dervishes with his brother Süleyman.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the ney in Tales from the Ney: the note begins with audible breath and then swells, as if the flute itself were sighing.
