Gnawa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

The Gnawa of Morocco descend from people who were brought north as slaves from West Africa and the Sahel. In nocturnal rituals, the lila, a master, the maâlem, leads the music on the guembri, a three-string bass lute with a soundbox covered in camel skin. Around it the qraqeb, metal castanets, rattle, and a choir sings in call and response until the participants fall into a trance. Since 2019 gnawa has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to how Mahmoud Guinia's deep guembri keeps repeating a short pattern while the qraqeb set a fast, rattling rhythm against it.
