Mahmoud Guinia

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Mahmoud Guinia from Essaouira was a maâlem, a master who leads the nocturnal Gnawa ceremony in which music puts the participants into a trance. He played the guembri, a three-stringed bass lute, and sang in a deep, raw voice, accompanied by hand clapping and iron krakebs. In 1994 The Trance of Seven Colors was released, which he recorded with the saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. In this way he became one of the best-known Gnawa voices outside Morocco.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the guembri: one low, humming pattern that keeps coming back, while the krakebs lay a rattling three-against-two rhythm over it.
