Shashmaqam
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Shashmaqam means ‘six maqams’: Buzruk, Rost, Navo, Dugoh, Segoh and Iroq. In the mid-eighteenth century this cycle took shape among court musicians in Bukhara, where Jewish musicians also played a major role. Each maqam has an instrumental part and a sung part, the nasr, set to Persian and Uzbek poetry. The long-necked lute, the tanbur, leads; the frame drum, the doira, keeps the rhythm. The knowledge is passed on orally from master to pupil.
Listening
Listening tip. Ari Babakhanov and his ensemble play the beginning of maqam Rost, the sarakhbor. Follow the voice: how does it slowly build towards a climax, and what is the doira doing at that moment?
