J-pop

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

In the late 1980s the term J-pop came into use in Japan for modern Japanese pop music, as distinct from the older, schlager-like kayōkyoku. In the 1990s producers and female singers became stars, and with the album First Love (1999), with R&B influences, Hikaru Utada made the best-selling Japanese record ever. J-pop is closely connected with anime, games and idol groups.
