City pop
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
City pop is the smooth, sunny Japanese pop of the late 1970s and the 1980s, made for a country that was growing rich: influences from American soft rock, funk and disco, with tight session musicians. Tatsuro Yamashita and Mariya Takeuchi were the big names. Around 2017 Takeuchi's Plastic Love (1984) became an internet hit via YouTube, and city pop gained a new, worldwide audience.
