Snap!
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Snap! was a German dance project of the producers Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti. They had worked together since 1985, including with Sven Väth in the group Off. In 1989 they started Snap!. They used American-sounding pseudonyms, Benito Benites and John Virgo Garrett III, because they thought the public held prejudices about German music. For the vocals and the raps they brought in American artists, such as the rapper Turbo B, who was serving as a soldier in Germany, and the singer Penny Ford.
Music and breakthrough
The Power became a worldwide hit in 1990, with a number 1 in England and the Netherlands. Ooops Up, Cult of Snap and Mary Had a Little Boy followed, and the debut album World Power. In 1991 the singer Thea Austin joined, who co-wrote Rhythm Is a Dancer. Turbo B did not want that song as a single, but it was released in 1992 anyway, and it became Snap!'s biggest hit, with a number 1 in Germany, England and the Netherlands, among other countries. The song used a sample from Automan by the American group Newcleus. Around the release of the album The Madman's Return (1992) Turbo B left. Snap! carried on without a rapper and made Welcome to Tomorrow (1994).
Influence
Snap! is an early example of Eurodance: European producers in the studio, American voices in front of the camera and the microphone, and a mix of house beats, synthesizers, a sung chorus and rap in the verses. The line-up changed constantly, but the sound remained the producers'. In this way the group could change its face without changing its sound.
