Rachel Portman

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Rachel Portman studied music at Oxford and began with music for British television and film, including Mike Leigh's Life Is Sweet (1990). She writes melodically and lightly, with plenty of woodwind, strings, piano and harp. Her music often moves in small, dancing figures. That suited the many costume dramas and literary adaptations she was asked to score. With Emma (1996) she became the first woman to win an Oscar for film music. Oscar nominations followed for The Cider House Rules (1999) and Chocolat (2000). In Never Let Me Go (2010) she wrote restrained music with solo violin and piano.
