Rachel Portman studeerde muziek in Oxford en begon met muziek voor Britse televisie en film, onder meer voor Life Is Sweet (1990) van Mike Leigh. Ze schrijft melodisch en licht, met veel houtblazers, strijkers, piano en harp. Haar muziek beweegt vaak in kleine, dansante figuren. Dat paste bij de vele kostuumdrama's en literatuurverfilmingen waarvoor ze werd gevraagd. Met Emma (1996) werd ze de eerste vrouw die een Oscar voor filmmuziek won. Later volgden Oscarnominaties voor The Cider House Rules (1999) en Chocolat (2000). In Never Let Me Go (2010) schreef ze ingetogen muziek met solo-viool en piano.
