Mike Post
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Mike Post was born in Berkeley in 1944. He began as an arranger and producer in pop music and at the age of 23 won a Grammy for his arrangement of Classical Gas by Mason Williams. He then concentrated on television. Together with the composer Pete Carpenter he wrote the music for many American series. The theme tunes of The Rockford Files (1974) and Hill Street Blues (1981) both reached number ten on the American chart. Magnum, P.I., The A-Team, L.A. Law and NYPD Blue followed, among others. For Law & Order (1990) he also devised the short 'dun dun' sound between scenes.
Listening
Listening tip. Notice how short and direct a TV theme is: in a few seconds a catchy motif, a pop rhythm and a recognisable instrument set the tone for the whole series.
