Malin Broman is a Swedish violinist, born in 1975. She is concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and plays in the Kungsbacka Piano Trio, the Nash Ensemble in London and the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble. She is often asked to appear as a soloist and chamber musician. She teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and previously taught at the University of Gothenburg. She is a great-niece of Sten Broman.

Music and breakthrough

Her career began with prizes. In 1994 she won third prize at the Eurovision Young Musicians competition and, that same year, first prize and the audience prize at the Washington International Competition for Strings. In 1996 came second prize at the Carl Nielsen competition in Odense. She has recorded for Hyperion, Alba, BIS and Naxos. During the coronavirus lockdown in 2020 she recorded all eight parts of Mendelssohn's Octet herself. She gave the first performance of Helen Grime's violin concerto and plays a Stradivarius and a viola by Luigi Bajoni, on loan from the Järnåker Foundation. Her albums include Basso Bailando from 2013, Back to StockHome from 2021 and Breaking Waves from 2025.

Influence

In 2019 she received the gold medal of the Swedish king for her contribution to musical life. She shows how a classical violinist can carry Swedish musical life and chamber music at the same time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a recording of Broman with the Kungsbacka Piano Trio and notice how the violin converses with the piano and cello instead of merely playing the melody.
