Johnny Dodds
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The clarinettist Johnny Dodds played in New Orleans with Kid Ory and then left for Chicago, where he joined King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band. His brother Baby Dodds played drums in the same band. Johnny Dodds played with a full, warm tone in the low register and a strong feeling for the blues. He played clarinet on Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings and in 1926 and 1927 made records with groups of his own, such as the New Orleans Wanderers and the Black Bottom Stompers. He stayed in Chicago for his whole career, where he also ran a taxi business, and died there in 1940.
