Kid Ory

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Kid Ory · Edward 'Kid' Ory led one of the most popular bands in New Orleans, in which King Oliver and Louis Armstrong, among others, played. He developed the tailgate style on the trombone: sliding tones and rhythmic counter-voices beneath the melody. In 1919 he moved to California and in 1922 his band in Los Angeles made one of the first recordings by Black New Orleans musicians. In Chicago he played on Armstrong's Hot Five records; his piece Muskrat Ramble became a classic. In the 1930s he gave up music for a while, but during the New Orleans revival of the 1940s he came back with a Creole Jazz Band of his own.

Listening tip. Follow the trombone: sliding tones that fill the space beneath the trumpet.
