Hubert Rostaing

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Hubert Rostaing was a French jazz clarinettist and tenor saxophonist, born on 17 September 1918 in Lyon and died on 10 June 1990 in Paris. He grew up in Algiers, where he learned clarinet and saxophone at the conservatoire and as a teenager performed with the Red Hotters. Later he toured Morocco and Tunisia. After a tour of Luxembourg in 1938 he moved to Paris, and in 1940 he performed in cabaret on the Champs-Élysées.

Music and breakthrough

He joined Django Reinhardt's Quintette du Hot Club de France when Stéphane Grappelli stayed on in London. Alix Combelle passed on his name. He first played saxophone, but switched to clarinet. In 1944 he was voted best clarinettist of the Hot Club in a poll. His playing was influenced by Benny Goodman. He played on and off with Reinhardt until 1948 and made recordings as a bandleader, including with Raymond Legrand, Aimé Barelli and Rex Stewart. With André Hodeir he worked on Autour d'un Récif from 1949 and Saint-Tropez from 1953. He also played rock 'n' roll and classical music.

Influence

Later in life he worked as a composer, arranger, conductor and musical director for 53 films and television series. Albums include Le Romantisme from 1976 and the music for the film La baston from 1985. Rostaing shows how the French jazz of the Hot Club flowed into film music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a recording by the Quintette du Hot Club de France from the 1940s. Notice the clarinet alongside Django Reinhardt's guitar, and how smoothly that clarinet carries the melody.
