Howard Shore

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Howard Shore (born in Toronto in 1946) studied at Berklee and for years was musical director of the television programme Saturday Night Live. His film work began with the director David Cronenberg, with The Brood (1979) and The Fly (1986). There he wrote dark, dissonant music for orchestra. That style also suited thrillers such as The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Se7en (1995). With The Lord of the Rings (2001–2003) he made the greatest work of his career: a network of dozens of leitmotifs for peoples, places and characters, as in an opera by Wagner. For the trilogy he won three Oscars.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice how each people or place has a tone colour of its own, such as Irish whistle for the hobbits and heavy brass for the enemy.
