Giuseppe Becce

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Giuseppe Becce was born in 1877 in Lonigo, near Vicenza, and settled in Berlin. In 1913 he played the title role in the film Richard Wagner and also wrote the music for it. His most important contribution was the Kinothek, which appeared from 1919: a library of short pieces of music, arranged by mood and situation, such as suspense, love or pursuit. Cinema musicians could quickly put together an accompaniment from it. In 1927 he published a large handbook on film music with Hans Erdmann and Ludwig Brav. Becce also wrote scores of his own, including for Murnau's Der letzte Mann (1924). That music has survived only in part; for the restoration of 2003 the composer Detlev Glanert completed it and orchestrated it.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice how short, characteristic pieces are placed one after another: each piece belongs to a single mood and changes as soon as the scene changes.
