Ludwig Brav

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ludwig Brav was a musician from the world of silent film in Germany. Little else is known about his life in our sources. He worked with Giuseppe Becce and Hans Erdmann, two composers who in the 1920s wrote and compiled music for the cinema. In 1927 the three together published the Allgemeines Handbuch der Filmmusik.

That handbook was intended for the pianists and small orchestras who accompanied a silent film live in the cinema. It built on Becce's Kinothek, a collection of snippets of music, each of which belonged to a particular mood or situation, such as tension, pursuit, despair or a mysterious night. Whoever accompanied the film could thus play in the style and motifs of well-known composers without having to invent everything themselves. The book therefore belongs to the early history of film music in Germany: it records how music colours an image, an idea that later returns in the work of film composers.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a piece of film music from the silent era, for example from Becce's Kinothek, and notice how in a few bars the music sets a mood such as tension or fear.
