Giles Martin

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Giles Martin is an English producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, born on 9 October 1969. He is the son of George Martin, the Beatles' producer. His first group was called Velvet Jones, and at university he wrote jingles. As a teenager he worked for his father, whose hearing had been deteriorating since the mid-1970s. Giles himself said of this that he became his father's ears at a young age.

Music and breakthrough

As a producer he worked with, among others, Kula Shaker, Jeff Beck, Elvis Costello, INXS, Kate Bush, Elton John and the Rolling Stones. In 2004 he made Pure by Hayley Westenra, the fastest-selling classical album ever in Great Britain. His name remained linked above all with the Beatles. In 2006 he made Love with his father, the music for a Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas, in which Beatles songs were mixed with digital techniques into a new whole. For this he received two Grammys. He also worked on The Beatles: Rock Band in 2009 and on new recordings by Paul McCartney in 2013. In 2022 he won an Emmy for The Beatles: Get Back.

Influence

Since 2014 he has been responsible for sound at Sonos, and since 2018 he has been head of audio at Universal Music Group at Abbey Road Studios. In this way he ensures that old recordings are heard anew with modern means.
