Ernst Reijseger

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ernst Reijseger is a Dutch cellist and composer, born in Bussum in 1954. He began playing the cello at the age of eight and was taught by Anner Bijlsma at the Fontijnschool in Bussum. He plays avant-garde jazz, free jazz, improvised music and contemporary classical music, and often gives solo concerts. He has worked with, among others, Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, Derek Bailey, Louis Sclavis, Yo-Yo Ma, Albert Mangelsdorff and Joëlle Léandre.

Music and breakthrough

He was for years a member of the ICP Orchestra of the Instant Composers Pool and plays in the Clusone Trio with Michael Moore and Han Bennink. He is also part of the Amsterdam String Trio and of the trio Graewe, Reijseger, Hemingway. His best-known solo album is Colla Parte from 1997, recorded in a villa in Sardinia. On that same trip he met the Voches de Sardinia, with whom he made Colla Voche. With Mola Sylla from Senegal he recorded Requiem for a Dying Planet and Janna. He also worked with musicians from Turkey, Iran and Argentina and with the Dutch group Boi Akih.

Influence

Reijseger also wrote film music, above all for Werner Herzog, including for The White Diamond, Cave of Forgotten Dreams and Salt and Fire. Herzog called him a great cellist who can do anything with his instrument. In this way Reijseger builds bridges between improvisation, film music and world music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Colla Parte and notice how a single cello provides melody, rhythm and tone colour alike, from soft, bowed lines to pinched and plucked sounds.
