De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig is a Dutch hip hop group from Amsterdam. The group consists of the producer Bas Bron and the rappers Vjèze Fur, Faberyayo and Willie Wartaal. It began as a project of Bron's, who wanted to make tracks with different rappers. When the word watskeburt became popular street slang in Amsterdam, Bron and Pepijn Lanen, Faberyayo, made a track about it, really only for friends. Freddie Tratlehner, Vjèze Fur, rapped along. Later Willie Wartaal joined too. The name comes from a T-shirt belonging to Lanen's brother.

Music and breakthrough

In May 2005 Watskeburt?! appeared. At first little happened, but radio stations picked it up, and within a short time it was at number 1. The album Parels voor de zwijnen followed that same year. Next came, among others, De Machine, with Hollereer, and De lachende derde, with Sterrenstof. In interviews the members enjoyed telling made-up stories, for example that they had found the lyrics in the metro.

Influence

De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig turned language into a playground. The lyrics are full of puns, invented words and scraps of other languages, over beats with strong influences from electronic music. That was new in Dutch hip hop, which until then had often sounded more serious or harder. The group won an Edison, among other awards, and played at Lowlands, Pinkpop and Rock Werchter.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Watskeburt?!. Notice the electronic beat and how the rappers play with sound and words: it is less about a story than about the fun of language itself.
