Typhoon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Typhoon is the stage name of rapper and singer Glenn de Randamie, born in 1984 in 't Harde on the Veluwe, into a musical family of Surinamese descent. His father played guitar and saxophone, his mother sang in a choir, and his brother raps as Blaxtar. At fifteen he started in the group Rudeteenz, together with a member of the Zwolle rap group Opgezwolle and his brother. He completed his pre-university secondary education (vwo) in Zwolle and in 2004 won the Grote Prijs van Nederland. After that he signed to the hip hop label Top Notch.

Music and breakthrough

In 2007 his debut Tussen licht en lucht was released, with influences from hip hop, jazz and African and Eastern music. He formed the group Fakkelbrigade, made the EP Chocolade with New Cool Collective and in 2009 received the Zilveren Harp. After that things went quiet for a while: Typhoon was overworked and was searching for his own musical identity. In 2014 Lobi da Basi was released, Surinamese for love rules. The album was also well received outside hip hop, OOR placed it second among the best albums of that year, and the single Hemel valt became popular in the Netherlands and Suriname. In 2020 Lichthuis followed.

Influence

Typhoon raps in Dutch, in a personal and reflective way, about faith, love, identity and origins. His music blends hip hop with jazz and other styles, and he often played with a live band, such as New Cool Collective. In this way he belongs to the Zwolle hip hop scene around Opgezwolle, and showed that Dutch-language rap could also reach the large pop festival audience.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hemel valt and notice how Typhoon distributes his words over the beat: which phrases get emphasis, and where does he leave space? Also listen for which instruments you recognise alongside the beat.
