Béla Bartók

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Béla Bartók was a pianist and teacher in Budapest and travelled through Hungary, Romania and Slovakia with a phonograph to record thousands of peasant songs. He worked the old scales and irregular rhythms he heard there into a sharp, personal modern language. His Allegro barbaro from 1911 treats the piano as a percussion instrument. In 1940 he fled fascism for New York, where he wrote his Concerto for Orchestra.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Allegro barbaro and hear how the piano is played like a drum, with hard, repeated chords.
