Antonín Dvořák
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Antonín Dvořák grew up in a Bohemian village and for years played the viola in the orchestra of the Prague theatre. Brahms helped him find a publisher, and his Slavonic Dances made him known throughout Europe. From 1892 to 1895 he directed a conservatory in New York, where he advised American composers to listen to spirituals and indigenous music. There he wrote his Ninth Symphony, Z nového světa (From the New World), with its famous Largo for cor anglais.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to the Largo and hear how, after a series of solemn brass chords, the cor anglais plays a simple, homesick melody.
