Anouk

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Anouk Teeuwe was born in 1975 in The Hague. Her mother sang in a blues band, and so she came into contact with music at an early age. Her youth was troubled: she ran away from home at fourteen and lived in children's homes for a time. At fifteen she stood on a stage for the first time, in a musicians' café in The Hague. She sang at weddings and parties and in 1994 went to the conservatoire in Rotterdam, but stopped after two years. Barry Hay and George Kooymans of Golden Earring saw her talent and wrote songs for her.

Music and breakthrough

In 1997 she broke through with Nobody's Wife, a strong rock song in English that topped the Dutch chart for weeks. The debut album Together Alone was a great success. Then came Urban Solitude (1999) with R U Kiddin' Me, the hard Graduated Fool (2002), Hotel New York (2004) with Girl and Lost, and Who's Your Momma (2007), recorded with the producer Glen Ballard. In 2013 she sang Birds at the Eurovision Song Contest and reached the final, for the first time in years for the Netherlands. In 2018 she made her first Dutch-language album, Wen d'r maar aan.

Influence

Anouk is known for explosive rock songs, but also makes small, fragile songs such as Michel. She tried soul, funk, hip hop and blues. She became the most successful Dutch solo artist in the album chart and showed that a Dutch woman with English-language rock could reach the top.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Nobody's Wife. Notice Anouk's raw, powerful voice and how the guitars come in heavy and loud in the chorus after the quieter verses.
