A.R. Rahman

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

A.R. Rahman (born in Chennai in 1967) began as a keyboard player, including in the orchestra of Ilaiyaraaja, and made advertising jingles. Director Mani Ratnam gave him his first film in 1992: Roja. Rahman worked from his own studio and built up his music layer by layer, with synthesizers, samples, acoustic instruments and singers from all over India. It sounded clearer and more international than Indian film music had until then. Bombay (1995), Dil Se.. (1998) and Lagaan (2001) followed, among others. With Slumdog Millionaire (2008) he won two Oscars, for the score and for the song Jai Ho.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the layered studio production: electronic beats and synthesizers alongside Indian percussion, chorus and solo vocals.
