Raunaq
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Raunaq, from 2014, grew out of a meeting between the composer A. R. Rahman and Kapil Sibal, who wrote poems. In 2013 the composer was given a book of paintings by Raja Ravi Varma as a gift, and he wanted the videos to use images from those paintings. When Sibal showed him his collection, he became fascinated by seven or eight poems. About six months before March 2014 he began setting them to music, with the support of Sony Music.
The album has seven tracks and portrays Indian society, blended with the lyricist's personal experiences. Aabhi Jaa is about love and parting, and Laadli is a tribute to all the women of the country. For Laadli the composer felt that Lata Mangeshkar was the right voice. The album was released on 1 September 2014 and dedicated to Vogue Empower, an initiative for women's empowerment.
