Tamil and South Indian film music

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Tamil and South Indian film music · In Chennai, Tamil cinema developed a musical tradition of its own. Ilaiyaraaja made his debut in 1976 with Annakkili. He mixed Tamil folk music with Western classical harmony, which he had studied thoroughly, and wrote music for more than a thousand films. For Mani Ratnam's Nayakan (1987), he also sang himself. A.R. Rahman, who had previously made advertising jingles, made his debut in 1992 with Roja, also by Mani Ratnam. He worked with synthesizers, a studio of his own and new voices, and made the sound fuller and more modern. After Bombay (1995), he became known throughout India, and later internationally too, with an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire.
