Terry Riley

Terry Riley is een Amerikaanse componist en uitvoerend musicus, geboren in 1935 in Californië. Hij groeide op in Redding en studeerde compositie in San Francisco en aan de Universiteit van Californië in Berkeley. Hij werkte samen met La Monte Young, was betrokken bij het San Francisco Tape Music Center, waar hij Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros en anderen ontmoette, en speelde in New York mee in het Theatre of Eternal Music van Young. Lange tijd reisde hij door Europa en speelde hij piano in pianobars om rond te komen.

Muziek en doorbraak

Zijn bekendste werk is In C, een compositie uit 1964 die in 1968 op plaat verscheen. Het bestaat uit korte melodische motieven die elke musicus in eigen tempo herhaalt, zodat er een voortdurend verschuivend geheel ontstaat. In 1969 volgde het album A Rainbow in Curved Air, met toetsinstrumenten en tapevertraging. Daarna studeerde hij bij de Indiase zanger Pandit Pran Nath en onderzocht hij later zuivere stemming, zoals in Shri Camel. Hij werkte vaak samen met het Kronos Quartet en met zijn zoon, gitarist Gyan Riley.

Invloed

Riley geldt als een pionier van de minimal music. Zijn werk, met herhaling, tapevertraging en improvisatie, heeft invloed gehad op experimentele muziek, rock en hedendaagse elektronische muziek. In C is daarom een goed beginpunt voor wie wil horen hoe minimale patronen zich in de popmuziek vertaalden.
