Philip Glass

Philip Glass werd in 1937 in Baltimore geboren, studeerde in Chicago en aan Juilliard en daarna in Parijs bij Nadia Boulanger. Daar werkte hij ook met de Indiase sitarspeler Ravi Shankar. Daaruit groeide zijn minimalistische stijl: korte figuren die eindeloos herhalen en langzaam veranderen, vaak in gebroken akkoorden. In Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi (1982), een film zonder dialoog, dragen beeld en muziek samen het verhaal. Voor Paul Schraders Mishima (1985) schreef hij voor strijkkwartet en orkest. Voor Martin Scorsese maakte hij Kundun (1997). Aan The Truman Show (1998) leverde hij enkele stukken, en The Hours (2002) leverde hem een Oscarnominatie op. Zijn pulserende patronen zijn sindsdien overal in filmmuziek te horen.
