Stan Getz

Tenorsaxofonist Stan Getz groeide op in de Bronx en speelde als tiener al in bigbands. Hij nam de lichte, zachte toon van Lester Young als voorbeeld. In 1947 kwam hij in de saxofoonsectie van Woody Herman, de 'Four Brothers'; met zijn ballade-solo in Early Autumn (1948) werd hij bekend. Zijn geluid werd 'The Sound' genoemd. In 1961 nam hij Focus op, met strijkers van Eddie Sauter. Een jaar later volgde Jazz Samba met gitarist Charlie Byrd, waarmee de bossa nova in Amerika doorbrak. Getz/Gilberto, met João en Astrud Gilberto en Antônio Carlos Jobim, werd een van de best verkochte jazzalbums. Getz had last van verslaving, maar bleef tot zijn dood spelen.
