Time and a Word

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Time and a Word · Yes's second album came about in a short time. After the 1969 debut, the group kept touring intensively and recorded in the breaks at Advision Studios in London, with producer Tony Colton and engineer Eddy Offord. For the first time a small orchestra played along: a brass section of session musicians and strings from the Royal College of Music, with arrangements by Tony Cox. Guitarist Peter Banks thought little of it, tension rose, and in 1970 Steve Howe took his place.

Singer Jon Anderson wrote lyrics that shifted from simple love themes to larger subjects. The opener No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed is a song by Richie Havens and begins with an orchestral theme from the film The Big Country. The Prophet borrows a theme from Jupiter by Gustav Holst. The reviews were mixed, but the album became the group's first to reach the British album chart, at number 45.

Listening

Listening tip. In The Prophet, listen to the theme borrowed from Jupiter by Gustav Holst: do you recognise it, and how does it sound within a rock song with orchestra?
