I’m Your Baby Tonight

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

I’m Your Baby Tonight · I'm Your Baby Tonight is Whitney Houston's third album, released on 6 November 1990 by Arista Records. After her poppy second record, Black critics accused her of neglecting her R&B and soul roots. This time she took creative control for the first time and received a credit as executive producer. She brought in the team of L.A. Reid and Babyface, who made the title song, Miracle and My Name Is Not Susan, among others, and she also continued to work with producer Narada Michael Walden.

The sound combines new jack swing with hip hop, funk and dance and sounds more mature than before. The only duet, We Didn't Know, she sang with Stevie Wonder. The title song and All the Man That I Need both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album reached number three on the American chart and topped the R&B chart. Later it was seen as a turning point in her career.

Listening tip. Listen to Feels So Good and notice the relaxed mood, which according to the producer was shaped by the music of Marvin Gaye.
