Lovehunter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Lovehunter · Whitesnake recorded their second studio album in 1979, at Clearwell Castle, again with producer Martin Birch. It was the last album with drummer Dave Dowle, who was then replaced by Ian Paice, formerly of Deep Purple. With this album the band reached the British top 30 for the first time.

Long Way from Home opens the album and made the British singles chart. Walking in the Shadow of the Blues is regarded as one of the best-loved early songs: David Coverdale and Bernie Marsden came up with the music very quickly, and Coverdale felt that it summed up his musical attitude at the time. The sleeve, by the fantasy artist Chris Achilleos, with a naked woman on a snake, caused a great deal of fuss. In the United States it was partly covered up. The Rolling Stone Album Guide thought the playing was as good as on an early Deep Purple album.
