Sweetnighter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Weather Report recorded Sweetnighter in February 1973 in less than a week at a studio in Connecticut. Josef Zawinul increasingly took the lead and steered the group away from the collective improvisation of their concerts towards more clearly structured pieces with funk and groove. Bassist Miroslav Vitouš played on it for the last time as principal bassist, and the electric bass now sounds much more prominent.

For that reason the album is regarded as the transition between the open style of the first records and the tighter, composed music. The two long pieces Boogie Woogie Waltz and 125th Street Congress are the core, with Non-Stop Home as the closer. Robert Christgau found Boogie Woogie Waltz fatally cute, despite the good improvisations. The piece remained a frequent live number in the 1970s.
