I Sing the Body Electric

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

I Sing the Body Electric is Weather Report's second studio album, from 1972. The band gained two new members: percussionist Dom Um Romão and drummer Eric Gravatt. The title comes from a poem by Walt Whitman from 1855 and from a short story by Ray Bradbury from 1969. The last three tracks were recorded live in Tokyo on 13 January 1972 and edited for this album. The whole concert was released separately as an import record under the title Live in Tokyo.

According to AllMusic, the studio tracks are more biting, more ethnically varied and more loaded with electronic effects and grand structures than before. The live pieces are fiercer still and for the first time reveal the group's enormous drive. Robert Christgau found the record neater and more sterile than the debut and less Miles Davis-sounding, and he was interested in it, but not gripped.
